The Vice Chancellor

Professor Fatima Batul Mukhtar is a professor of Botany with plant physiology as her area of specialization. Additional areas of interest are biostatistics, horticulture, agricultural biotechnology and food security. She was born in the city of Kano in northern part of Nigeria.

She started her primary education at Shahuchi Primary School and completed her primary education at a boarding school, Shekara Girls Boarding Primary School. She then proceeded to Government Girls College, Dala, Kano, where she obtained West African School Certificate (WASC) in 1980. She proceeded to Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria where she graduated with a degree in Botany in 1984. She undertook her National Youths Service Corps at Forestry Division, Ministry of Agriculture, Kano State. She did her master’s degree at Bayero University, Kano in 1994. She afterwards got employment with the same University in the Department of Biological Sciences. She immediately enrolled for a Ph.D program in Botany (plant physiology) which she completed in 2005. The research work was done at the International Institute for Tropical Agriculture, Kano Station. Her Ph.D thesis was one of the three selected by the University and entered into a National competition where it scored 5th position. She also has a certificate on Agricultural biotechnology following a short course in Michigan State University, USA in 2012.

Professor Fatima started working with B.U.K in 1994 as assistant lecturer and through hard work she rose through the ranks to become a Senior lecturer in 2003, Associate Professor in 2007 and Professor in 2010. She has taught several courses and supervised many under-graduate students.

Professor Fatima has held several academic positions in the University as member of various faculty and departmental committees, remedial and undergraduate level coordinator from 2001 to 2002. She was also post graduate level coordinator from 2002 to 2008. She served as Head of Plant Science Department from 2012 to 2013. She is editor to many journals and has participated in accrediting the academic programmes of some tertiary institutions in the country. She has been an external examiner for undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in some Universities. She has also assessed candidates for promotion to the post of Associate professor. She was honoured with two awards by her students.

In 2013 she was released on leave of absence to a newly established university, Northwest University to establish the Faculty of Science as the pioneer dean. She has held many academic and administrative responsibilities in addition to being the Dean of the Faculty including member, Appointments and Promotion committee, Staff Audit Committee, Chairperson, Academic Staff Development Committee, Chairperson, Committee for the Establishment of Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences and Chairperson, committee for the establishment of Biotechnology Programme at Northwest University, Kano. She is a member of Senate and Governing Council of NWU, Kano. She was in 2015 searched for the post of Vice - Chancellor of Northwest University, Kano.

In 2015, Professor Fatima was appointed the pioneer Deputy Vice- Chancellor, Northwest University, Kano. Since then she has chaired ICT Committee, Hospital Revolving Fund Committee and Budget Monitoring and Performance Committee. She was appointed Vice- Chancellor Federal University, Dutse in February, 2016.

At the state level she served in many committees including technical and implementation committees for the establishment of Northwest University, Kano (NWU, Kano). She also served in Kano State political transition committee in 2015 and was appointed member of the Kano State Education Promotion Committee in the same year. At the National level, Professor Fatima has served as a resource person to the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) for the accreditation of Polytechnics and Colleges of Education in the Country.

Professor Fatima is a distinguished researcher with more than 50 peer- reviewed journal articles, some newspaper articles, and has authored 3 books; An Introduction to Biostatistics, Experimental Research Methodology and Data Analysis in the Life Sciences and Careers in Botany. She has also co –edited 1. She has supervised and co – supervised more than 30 postgraduate students at the masters’ and PhD levels. She has attended many conferences both local and international and presented papers and posters. Professor Fatima has organized scientific conferences and workshops at various times.

Professor Fatima founded and established the Kano Botanic Garden single handedly in 2008. The Garden is mainly for conservation of indigenous plants, education, public enlightenment and leisure.

She is a member of both national and international professional organizations including Botanical Society of Nigeria and Botanical Society of America as well as Non- Governmental organizations including, Muslim Sisters Organization, Federation of Muslim Women Association of Nigeria (FOMWAN), Women Farmers Association of Nigeria (WOFAN).

Professor Fatima is married with 5 daughters. Her hobbies are; reading, writing, travelling and gardening.

Born in Gumel Jigawa state, He attended Science Secondary School, Dawakin Kudu Kano State (1981 – 1984). He obtained his Bachelor Degree in Applied Biology from Bayero University, Kano in 1989, Master degree in Food Biotechnology from University of Strathclyde Glasgow, United Kingdom in 1995 and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Enzyme and Food Biotechnology from Universiti Putra Malaysia in 2006. He was a Graduate Assistant at the department of Biological science, Bayero University Kano (1990 – 1992) and a lecturer (1990 to 1997), an Associate Professor at Universiti Putra Malaysia (2006 – 2017) and now a Professor of Enzyme and Food Biotechnology at the department of Microbiology and Biotechnology.

He is the current Deputy Vice Chancellor Academic Services Federal University Dutse Jigawa State. His academic career spun over 25 years with vast experience in Research and Teaching at the university and has authored over 90 publications in international journals and international conference proceedings. He is a member of the American Oil Chemists’ Society (AOCS), Malaysian Institute of Food Technology (MIFT), International Union of Food Science and Technology (IUFoST) and former President of the Nigerians in the Diaspora organization Malaysia (NIDOMY)(2008- 2011).

Professor Usman Adamu Izge, was born at the then General Hospital Maiduguri on 16th December, 1966. He attended Izge 'A' Primary School from 1972 to 1978 and Mafoni Primary School in Maiduguri from 1978 to 1980. From there he proceeded to Government Secondary School Jakusko in Yobe State from 1980 to 1982 and then Government Science Secondary School Gashua also in Yobe State from 1982 to 1985 where he was the Assistant Head Boy in 1984 and Head Boy in 1985.

He was admitted into the School of Basic Studies (SBS), Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria from August 1985 to June, 1986 and then to Faculty of Agriculture also at the Ahmadu Bello University Zaria in 1986. He graduated in 1990 with a Bachelor of Agriculture Degree in Crop Science and subsequently did his National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) as a class room teacher at Government College Wamba, Wamba Local Government Area of Nasarawa State from October 1990 to September, 1991. On completion of NYSC he was appointed as Assistant Lecturer in December 1991 at the Sir Kashim Ibrahim College of Education, Maiduguri, where he taught courses in agriculture up to January, 1994.

In the same year 1994, he was appointed as Graduate Assistant in the then Department of Crop Science and now Department of Crop Production, Faculty of Agriculture, University of Maiduguri on 17th January. He proceeded for Postgraduate Degree also in the same year 1994 to Ahmadu Bello University Zaria, where he graduated with a Masters' of Science Degree in Genetics and Crop Breeding in 1998. After completion of his Masters Degree, he returned to Maiduguri and was promoted to Assistant Lecturer in the same year, 1998. He was subsequently promoted to the rank of Lecturer II in 2000 and to Lecturer I in 2002.

He enrolled for his PhD Degree at the then Federal University of Technology, now Modibbo Adama University of Technology, Yola in 2004 and graduated in 2007 with a PhD Degree in Genetics and Crop Breeding. Upon returning to Maiduguri after obtaining his PhD Degree, he was promoted to the rank of Senior Lecturer in October, 2007 and to Associate Professor in October, 2009 and to Professor in October, 2012 all by the University of Maiduguri Governing Council.

Professor Izge was a member, Faculty of Agriculture University of Maiduguri Research Committee, secretary, Standing Committee on Examination Malpractice, member, National Agricultural and Land Development (NALDA) feasibility studies, member, Farm Management Committee. He was also a Departmental Examination Officer and a Faculty Year Coordinator. He was a Member University of Maiduguri Biotechnology and Technical Implementation Committee, member Board of Journal of Arid Agriculture, elected member from University of Maiduguri Congregation on Campus Tenant Committee, elected member from University of Maiduguri Congregation on Campus Motoring Committee. He was a member, Curriculum Review Committee, saddled with the review of curriculum for the Faculty of Agriculture in Federal University Kashere. At the State level, Professor Izge was a member, Borno State Government Agricultural Transformation Team from 2012 to 2015.

He was the Chairman, Strategic Planning Drafting Committee, Federal University Dutse, Chairman, Administrative Investigative Committee, Chairman, Teaching and Learning Committee, Chairman, War Against Grade Sorting, Chairman, Junior Staff Disciplinary Committee, Chairman, University Health Policy Committee, Chairman, University Farm, Chairman, Academic Brief Review Committee, Chairman, Student Disciplinary Committee, Chairman, House Allocation Committee, Member, Finance and General Purpose Committee on Council, and Member, Appointment and Promotion Committee also on Council. He is Chairman, Committee on the review of scheme of service for Academic Staff, Chairman, review of conditions of service for junior and senior non-teaching staff. Professor Izge is also the Chairman, Monitoring and Evaluation Committee on TetFund Projects, and Chairman, Sevicom Committee. He is a Member, Procurement Planning Committee, Member, of Committee of Board of Consultancy Services and Member, Federal University Dutse Security Committee.

At National level, Professor Izge was a State Facilitator, national immunization baseline coverage survey in charge of Nasarawa State in 2001. He was a member on a National Study for the Rehabilitation of Public Irrigation Scheme. A facilitator, National Population and Housing Census. Member, National Experts on Climate Change that was charged with the preparation of Nigeria 2nd National Communication on Green House Gases, Vulnerability and Adaptability. He was the Team Leader, North eastern Nigeria, Drought Tolerant Maize for Africa (DTMA) Project, sponsored by Bill and Melinda Gate Foundation. He has been a visiting Professor in the Department of Crop Production, Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi since 2013 and have been external examiner in several other Universities. He was also a visiting lecturer in Nasarawa State University, Shabu-Lafia Campus from 2008-2010. Professor Izge supervised several postgraduate students both at M. Sc and PhD.

He was the Head of Department, Department of Crop Production, Faculty of Agriculture, University of Maiduguri from 2010 to 2012 and then proceeded on sabbatical leave in 2012 to Federal University Dutse in Jigawa State, where he is on leave of absence at the moment. Professor Izge was the pioneer Head of Crop Science Department, Federal University Dutse. He was Dean of Student Affairs, Federal University Dutse and was the Editor-in-Chief, Dutse Journal of Agriculture and Food Security (DUJAFS). He was also the Director of Academic Planning and Quality Assurance of the University. Presently, Professor Izge is the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Central Administration, Federal University Dutse.

He has received several awards among which are, the Best Maize Technology Development and Dissemination Team Award, by Bill and Melinda Gate Foundation in 2007 and 2010. The distinguished award of honour by the Farm Management Association of Nigeria (FAMAN). Fellow Award by Corporate Affairs Institute. Award of Excellence by National Association of Agricultural Students. Award of Honour as 1st PhD holder in Izge Community by Izge Student Association, Award of Honour as 1st Professor in Izge Community and Gwoza West also by Izge Student Association.

Professor Izge is a member of Genetic Society of Nigeria (GSN), Agricultural Society of Nigeria (ASN), Biotechnology Society of Nigeria (BSN) and several other professional bodies. He has published widely and has to his credit more than 45 publications including books and articles that appears in national and international reputable journals.

Professor Izge has visited several countries in Europe. He has also visited the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and several countries in Africa and Asia. Professor Izge can simply be described as honest, hard working and level headed individual. He minds his business. He is happily married. By the grace of God Almighty, Professor Izge has been blessed with a number of fast growing, healthy and amiable children.

M. Bukar Usman was born on 1st March, 1958 and hails from Chibok Local Government Area of Borno State. He attended Central Primary School, Chibok from 1964 to 1970 and completed his Secondary School Education at Government Secondary School, Bauchi in 1976. He attended University of Maiduguri, where he obtained his B. A. and M. A. Degrees in History in 1981 and 1984 respectively.

After completing his National Youth Service Corps at Ife-City College, (defunct Oyo State), he took up appointment as Graduate Assistant in the Department of History, University of Maiduguri in 1982. Upon successful completion of his Master Degree and promotion to the rank of Assistant Lecturer, M. Bukar Usman joined the Administrative Cadre of the University where he began his career as University Professional Administrator in 1985. He rose through the ranks from Administrative Officer in 1985 to Deputy Registrar in 2003 and Director (Human Resources) in 2016.

As an Administrative Officer, he was posted to Modibbo Adama College, Yola when it was merged to the University of Maiduguri as Administrative Officer in charge of the Office of the Deputy Vice-Chancellor. He discharged his duties so well and was posted back to Maiduguri to Head the Office of the Vice-Chancellor. As a result of his knowledge, wisdom, hard work and calm disposition particularly on issues involving Students and Staff, he actively participated in resolving volatile issues both as a Staff in the Registry, as well as that of the Vice-Chancellor’s Office. He played a major role in the harmonious relationship that existed between the two arms of Administration in the University, which earned him successive promotions from Administrative Officer in 1985 to Principal Assistant Registrar in 1991.

M. Bukar Usman was seconded to the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS) Kuru, as the Special Assistant to the Director-General. While at NIPSS, he managed very well issues and affairs of Staff and Participants of the Senior Executive Course, welfare and security, to the satisfaction of the Board of Governors of the National Institute (NI), that he was promoted to the rank of Deputy Director in 1996, an equivalent position of Deputy Registrar in the University system.

In spite of pressure put on him to continue serving the National Institute after putting in seven years, M. Bukar Usman returned to the University of Maiduguri to continue his career in University administration. While in University of Maiduguri, he served in virtually all the Divisions and Units in the Registry including the Faculty Office and Secretary to the School of Postgraduate Studies of the University. He interacted very well with the entire University Community and because of his loyalty, honesty, courage and firmness on matters of principle; he earned the respect and admiration of both Administrative and Academic Staff. As a taste of his popularity, he was overwhelmingly elected two (2) times consecutively, from 2005 to 2013 into the Governing Council of University of Maiduguri, on the platform of Congregation.

M. Bukar Usman was offered Sabbatical appointments by many Nigerian Universities. These include, Nigeria Turkish Nile University, Abuja, Yobe State University, Damaturu and Jigawa State University, now Sule Lamido University, Kafin Hausa, Jigawa State. He however chose and served the young Sule Lamido University, Kafin Hausa between 2014-2015 so as to help establish the 39th State University and 129th in the Nigerian University system at that time. He was appointed as second Registrar, Federal University Dutse and assumed duty on 15th February, 2017.

Ghaji Badawi, a Professor of Library and Information Science from the Bayero University Kano (B.U.K), Nigeria, has been involved in teaching both undergraduate and postgraduate courses in Library and Information Science since 1992. Born at Wudil, Wudil Local Government Area, Kano State in 1957; she also attended Bayero University Kano, where she obtained a Bachelors of Art degree in Library Science in 1992, and a Master of Art degree in Library Science in 1994 from the same institution respectively. Later in 2003, she obtained a Ph.D. degree in Library and Information Science from Bayero University Kano.

Professor Ghaji Badawi worked with Bayero University Kano as a Graduate Assistant from 1992 – 1995, Assistant Lecturer from 1995 – 1998, Lecturer I from 1998 – 2001, Lecturer II from 2001 – 2004, Senior Lecturer from 2004 – 2007, Reader from 2007 – 2012, and later rose to the rank of a Professor in 2012 at the same Institution; she was the first female Professor and number 16 to deliver her inaugural lectures on the 29th July, 2015 in Bayero University, Kano. At FUD, she was appointed Chairperson: Animal Control Committee, University Bookshop. Notable among her achievements as University Librarian are: Establishment of Faculty of Medical and Health Services Library including E-Library, Faculty of Agriculture E-Library, Preservation and Conservation Department, IJMB Library, Landscaping of the University Library Premises. Professor Ghaji is the Pioneer Chief-editor of J. D. AMIN Library Quarterly Bulletin (JDALQB), a publication of the University Library; she steers the activities of the Bulletin from its inception to date.

Her other responsibilities at the Federal University Dutse include: University Librarian, J. D. AMIN Library, Member, Senate Committee, Member, University Management Committee, Member, Appointment & Promotion Committee, Member (A & PC) Admin, Professional and Teaching Staff, Member Committee of Provost, Deans and Directors, Resource Verification Committee, University Development Committee, Appointment & Promotion Committee (FA & PC) Library, Servicom Committee, Student Development Committee, Security Committee, Research & Publications, Junior Staff Disciplinary Committee, Board Member School of Postgraduate Studies, Non-Teaching Staff Development Committee, Committee on Admissions.

Her ten year research on the Gada Prostitutes of Kano (2004-2014) is now a world renowned reference work for researchers in Disadvantaged Women Studies. A culmination of the ten year research was presented by the Professor as her Inaugural Lecture. She was given an award of N1,000,000 by Bayero University to continue the research with the hope of making the Prostitutes in Gada from ‘Misfits’ to ‘Most-fits’.

Professor Ghaji is happily married and blessed with four children.
